The logo is derived from the red flower of a Common Coral Tree, Sacred Coral Tree, Lucky Bean Tree, Umsinsi, (Erythrina lysistemon). An indigenous South African tree. It pays homage to the company’s name origin. It is regarded as a royal tree, and was planted on the graves of Zulu chiefs. It has many uses in agriculture, traditional medicine, and as a food source for numerous animals and birds. The tree connects many disciplines to support life and growth.
The name Gananda derives from the name Sigananda kaZokufa Shezi, a legendary Zulu military general who lived to the ripe old age of about 92 years old during the period ca. 1815 to 1906. He served under four Zulu kings namely Shaka, Dingaan, Mpande and Cetshwayo. Sigananda was well liked and respected by his people and had a reputation for being highly trustworthy, fiercely loyal and a strong leader. Both Inkosi Sigananda and King Cetshwayo were well known by Barry’s Great-Great Grandfather Alfred Adams and his son Charlie Adams. Charlie was nicknamed from a young age “Gananda” by the Zulu people for sharing the same traits of trustworthiness, honour and reliability. The name has stuck and been used in the family ever since.
